Fue precioso ver cuan cierto es eso de que los elefantes tienen una excelente memoria. Algunos de los elefantes traídos a este lugar han sido encontrados junto a sus padres, cadáveres sin cabeza que tuvieron la mala suerte de cruzarse con algún cazador de marfil. Otros se encontraban deambulando, desnutridos y débiles.
Afortunadamente existen centros como The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust que no solo salvan la vida de estos animales sino que les dan tanto cariño que consiguen superar el miedo (y la rabia) que nos tienen a los humanos por el daño que se les ha hecho, sin ningún motivo, durante tanto tiempo.
Estos lugares acogen mayoritariamente elefantes, también rinocerontes y en general cualquier animal que se encuentre enfermo o en malas condiciones. Adoptan criaturas procedentes de toda Kenia, las alimentan, juegan con ellas e incluso duermen con ellas! Cada cuidador tiene un grupo pequeño de animales a los que salvaguardar hasta que tienen 10 años, después se les regresa a su entorno natural para que sigan su vida.
Cuando estuvimos de acampada en el Monte Kenia, nos cruzamos con un elefante que había sido atacado por un cazador y le faltaba medio colmillo. El animal, bastante furioso, destruyó todos los árboles de alrededor y los lanzaba contra nuestras tiendas de campaña...
¿Cuánto más durarán estás aficiones inhumanas?
El espectáculo es el siguiente: después de pagar un módico precio de 1000KES (aprox10€) esperas detrás de una zona acordonada. Van apareciendo detrás de los árboles los cuidadores seguidos de sus elefantes, mientras alguien va colocando biberones del tamaño de media pierna llenos de cinco litros de leche en varios puestos. Cada elefante sabe cuál es su sitio y cada cuidador les da dos biberones a cada animal. Mientras tanto te cuentan la historia de ellos y algunas curiosidades acerca de los elefantes. Como ven, ellos nunca se separan de sus cuidadores y si hay algún bebé elefante, siempre está en medio de la manada, todos lo protegen. Les pasean frente a nosotros, para que podamos sentir esa piel tan áspera y en parte peluda que tienen! Al final les dan una pelota para que juegen fútbol y todos acaban metidos dentro del charco de agua...

It was wonderful to see how true it is what is said about elephant's excellent memory. Some of these babies are brought after being found next to their parents, corpses without a head who had the bad luck of being killed by ivory hunters. Others where found hungry and weak walking around.
Fortunately there are some places like The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust who doesn't only saves their lives but also gives them so much love that they manage to get over the fear (and the anger) against humans for all the damage it's been done to them, for no reason, for so long.
This centers shelter mainly elephants, also rhinos and in general every other animal sick or in bad conditions. They adopt creatures from all over Kenya, feed them, play with them and even sleep with them! Each care keeper takes care of a small group until they are 10 years, after that they are returned to their natural habitat so they can continue with their lifestyle.

When we camped in Mount Kenya we crossed an elephant who was attacked by a hunter and missed half ivory. The animal, quite furious, destroyed all the trees from around and launch them to our tents...
