¡A quién no le gusta un bonito ramo de flores! Yo no tenía ni idea, pero es el tercer recurso que genera mayores ingresos a Kenia. En 2005 el país exportó 82.000 toneladas de flores (toneladas!), lo que significó 250millones de dólares para ese año, y también se estima que crece un 20% cada año que pasa. Curiosamente, la mayor parte va a parar a Europa, pero con precios muy diferentes. En NAKUMAT, el supermercado más caro de Kenia, un ramo como los de abajo cuesta 5€, mientras que en la calle, docena y media de rosas rojas sin espinas (sin regatear) y más frescas te las ofrecen por 3€.

Los invernaderos que yo he visto están por toda la zona cercana al lago Naivasha, es impresionante! En ellos trabajan solo mujeres, porque dicen que somos más delicadas y eficientes con las flores, las ves a todas ellas como a las 4pm esperando el autobús que las lleve a casa.

Y el segundo ingreso del país es el té, muy sorprendentemente! Kenia es el tercer exportador de té del mundo, 110.000 hectareas de terreno dedicadas a este cultivo, alrededor de 250millones de kilos producidos al año, ¿qué pasa con ello? Resulta que se subasta en el país, y los mayores compradores son Pakistan, Reino Unido y Egipto. En 2010 se batieron récords, trayendo 930 millones de dólares al país!! Y no se engañen, las bolsitas de Twinings o Lipton lo que tienen es té keniata, sobretodo el té negro, parte del verde y también Earl Gray. Kenia es la mayor granja de té negro del mundo!!!

Y seguro que se imaginan el té como una planta pequeñita... Pues en realidad es un arbusto, bastante grueso y muy frondoso, que cada cierto tiempo hay que sacarlo del terreno y plantar uno nuevo para que la planta produzca más. El té se cosecha a mano, porque sólo cuentan los retoños jóvenes que hay en la punta de las ramas, y alrededor de las plantaciones hay montones de casas alargadas donde viven las personas que trabajan en ello y sus familias.

Interestingly, most goes to Europe, but with very different prices. In NAKUMAT, the most expensive supermarket in Kenya, a bouquet like the ones below costs 5€, while in the streets one and a half dozen red roses without thorns (not bargaining) and more fresh will be offered for 3€.

The greenhouses I've seen are all over the area near Lake Naivasha, is awesome! Women are the only ones working there, because they say they are more sensitive and efficient with flowers, and you see them all at 4pm waiting for the bus to take them home.

And the second income, very suprisinly, is tea! Kenya is the third largest exporter of tea in the world, over 110,000 hectares of land devoted to this crop, about 250millions of kilos produced per year, and what happens to it? There is an option in the country and the biggest buyers are Pakistan, United Kingdom and Egypt. Records were set in 2010, bringing 930 million dollars into the country! And make no mistake, the bags of Twinings and Lipton tea you buy have Kenyan tea, especially black tea, green tea and Earl Gray. Kenya is the largest black tea farm in the world!

And sure you can imagine the tea plant tiny... It's actually a shrub, quite thick and very lush, that periodically must be removed from the field and they plant a new plant in order to produce more. The tea is harvested by hand, because they need to get only young shoots at the tip of the branches, and around the plantations there are lots of long houses so that the people who work in it and their families live.
